This is a bit of an open question right now. Head coach Cheryl Reeve has gone with the same group of five in each of her team's group-stage games: Chelsea Gray, Diana Taurasi, Napheesa Collier, A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. The U.S. and Nigeria have met only once at the Olympics in women's basketball, a group-stage game in Tokyo four years ago. Team USA won that won by nine, 81-72, although it's worth noting that the Americans took a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter. The two sides have also met twice previously at the FIBA World Cup, with the U.S. winning a group-stage game in 2006 and a quarterfinal in 2018.
A refresher on how the knockout rounds work in Olympic basketball
The knockout rounds begin with eight teams in the quarterfinals. A random draw will determine the matchups for the quarterfinals, with two important caveats:
- The two highest-ranked teams will be placed in the same pot and therefore end up on opposite sides of the bracket.
- Teams from the same group can't be drawn against each other in the quarterfinals.
From there, the tournament follows a standard single-elimination format. In the quarterfinal round, the winners advance to the semifinals and the losers are eliminated. In the semifinal round, the winners advance to the gold medal game and the losers go on to play in the bronze medal game.
