What is the format for the Olympic handball tournament?
The men's and women's tournaments abide by the same format and rules. In the group play round, 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six.
How does Olympic handball group play work?
Each team in the group plays each other once. A team earns two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. The four teams in each group with the most points advance to the quarterfinals, while the bottom four teams, two from each group, will be eliminated from from the tournament.
How does Olympic handball knockout stage work?
Teams are ranked based on the number of points they earned in group play and will determine who each team plays in the knockout stage. If there is a tie on the number of points earned during group play, the goal differential of all matches serves as a tiebreaker. If two teams are tied for goal differential, then whichever team scored more goals during group play earns the higher ranking. Quarterfinal matchups are then decided.
The quarterfinals, semis, bronze-medal match and gold-medal match will follow a knockout format. In the quarterfinals, the winner of a match advances to the semifinals while the loser is eliminated from the tournament. In the semifinals, the winner advances to the gold medal game while the loser will play in the bronze medal game.
