What to know about artistic swimming at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Artistic swimming -- formerly known as synchronized swimming -- arrived at the Tokyo Olympics with an new name. Now, the sport heads to the Paris Games with a new format, new scoring system and the guarantee of a new gold medalist.

Russia, the gold medal winners in both the team and duet competition at every Olympics since 1996, will not participate in Paris due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. As a result, the sport is as wide-open as it's been in decades.

A revamped scoring system also has been introduced since Tokyo in order to make the sport more objective and less dependent on the subjective opinions of judges. Routines now demand required elements with fixed degrees of difficulty, similar to figure skating. The competition structure also has changed. An acrobatic routine has been added to the team competition. Conversely, the duet competition, which used to include a preliminary free routine in addition to a final free routine, now only includes a final.

For the first time since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the United States qualified as one of the eight nations participating in the team event. Based on recent world championships results, the Americans pose a legitimate threat for a medal.
