What to know about skateboarding at the 2024 Paris Olympics
The iconic Place de la Concorde will be the site of the skateboarding competitions in Paris as the sport makes its second Olympic appearance. It debuted on the program three years ago in Tokyo.
Skateboard street — a contest which takes place on a course full of urban obstacles — will take center stage during the opening days of the Olympics, while skateboard park — a contest which takes place in a bowl-shaped course — will close out the skateboarding program later on.
The last Olympics featured dominant performances from teenage skaters in the women's events, and that trend is likely to continue in Paris. Tokyo Olympic medalists Cocona Hiraki (Japan) and Sky Brown (Great Britain) remain among the favorites in women's park, while 14-year-old Australian Arisa Trew is among the newcomers who could also find a spot on the podium.
Speaking of teenage newcomers, look out for 14-year-old Ginwoo Onodera of Japan. The young prodigy holds the No. 1 ranking in men's street and is part of an incredibly strong contingent of Japanese skaters who will be challenging Americans Nyjah Huston and Jagger Eaton for gold.
In men's park, medal aspirations will be high for the United States, which has three of the world's top skaters in Tate Carew, Gavin Bottger and Tom Schaar. Australia's Keegan Palmer is still the reigning Olympic gold medalist and remains one of the favorites.
