What to know about swimming at the 2024 Paris Olympics
Swimming, especially pool swimming, is traditionally one of the marquee sports at every Olympics. It's also one of the most successful sports for the United States; nearly one-fourth of all U.S. Olympic gold medals have come in swimming. The U.S. has produced many of the most decorated Olympic swimmers of all time, including Mark Spitz, Jenny Thompson, and of course 23-time gold medalist Michael Phelps.
The latest all-time American swimming great, Katie Ledecky, heads to her fourth Olympics in Paris with a chance to become the most decorated female swimmer of all time. However, Ledecky faces some of her stiffest competition ever this year with international stars Ariarne Titmus (Australia) and Summer McIntosh (Canada) emerging as potential greats in their own right.
The United States has earned the most medals in swimming at the last eight consecutive Olympics, but that streak could be in legitimate jeopardy in Paris. At the 2023 World Championships, it was longtime rivals Australia that set the pace with 13 gold medals to Team USA's seven. The Aussies will bring arguably their best-ever contingent of swimmers to the 2024 Games, led by world record holders Mollie O'Callaghan, Kaylee McKeown and Titmus.
But that won't scare the Americans, who've steadily picked up momentum over the past 12 months. Caeleb Dressel, after spending much of 2022 and '23 out of the pool, has since recovered much of the form that helped him win five gold medals at the Tokyo Games. Chris Guiliano was the breakout star at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials and could race up to six events in Paris. Regan Smith and Gretchen Walsh both posted world-record swims at Trials and Kate Douglass heads to Paris as a gold medal favorite in multiple events.
It all sets the stage for what could be one of the most exciting swimming programs at the Olympics in recent memory,
