The sport of triathlon is fresh off a historic Tokyo Olympic Games, in which Bermuda’s Flora Duffy broke the women’s Olympic record with a time of 1 hour, 55 minutes, 36 seconds. Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt earned the first triathlon medal for his country, winning gold in the men’s event.
The 2020 Games also brought about the debut of the mixed team relay, featuring two men and two women from each nation and a gold medal for Great Britain (silver: United States, bronze: France).
In Paris, Great Britain's Alex Yee is considered a men's gold medal favorite, along with French challengers Dorian Coninx and Leo Bergere, plus Blummenfelt, whose 2023 was marred by sickness.
On the women's side, Duffy will contend with fellow favorites Beth Potter and Georgia Taylor-Brown of Great Britain as she looks to repeat.
Seth Rider, Morgan Pearson, Taylor Spivey, Kirsten Kasper and Taylor Knibb represent the U.S. contingent bound for Paris.
Where is triathlon being held at the Paris Olympics?
The triathlon events will begin on a temporary floating pontoon below the Pont Alexandre III bridge. After a swim portion in the Seine, the athletes will cycle a course through the heart of Paris, passing landmarks such as the Champs-Elysées. The final portion of the event, the run, will track back through Paris to the finish line on Pont Alexandre III bridge.
