The format for the Olympic volleyball tournament is the same for men and women. For decades, each 12-team field was previously split into two pools of six, with each team playing five matches total in the pool phase. Starting this year for Paris, each 12-team field will be split into three pools of four, with each team playing only three matches total in the pool phase.

The competition begins with a preliminary round, in which each team plays the other three in its group once. This is also known as "round-robin" play. Teams receive three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 victory, two points for a 3-2 victory, or one point for a match lost 2-3. No points are awarded for games lost 0-3, 1-3 or by forfeit.

Upon conclusion of the preliminary round, the top-two teams from each pool and two best third-place teams qualify for the quarterfinals; the bottom four teams are out of medal contention. 

On the men's side, France will return to the Games to defend their gold medal at the Tokyo Games. Before 2020, the French men's team's best Olympic result was an eighth-place finish in 1988. But that changed in 2020 when the French men's team not only advanced to the tournament's knockout round but also secured a spot in the final. France fought a determined China squad in the gold medal match. After five-fierce sets featuring outstanding performances by outside hitter Earvin N'Gapeth, Jean Patry and Trevor Clevenot, France came out on top and defeated China 3-2. 

On the women's side, the U.S. team will defend their title and first-ever gold medal they won in Tokyo. The U.S. women's team was the second-seeded team at the 2020 Olympics. After dropping only one game on its way to the quarterfinals, Team USA defeated the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals and then Serbia in the semifinals. In the final, the U.S. faced a tough opponent in Brazil. The United States' top scorers, Andrea Drews and Michelle Bartsch-Hackley, combined for 29 in the final, helping the team secure victory and Team USA's first-ever gold medal. Team captain Jordan Larson returns after a shocking retirement reversal to lead her team in France. 

South Paris Arena No. 1, found in the Paris Expo complex, will serve as the home of Olympic volleyball in 2024. Originally built in 1923 for the Paris Trade Fair, structures around the complex have been renovated over the years to modernize the facilities for the Olympic Games and the future. Olympic handball, weightlifting and table tennis will also compete inside buildings around the Paris Expo site.
