What to know about weightlifting at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Weightlifting returns to the Olympics in Paris in the form of a smaller, more streamlined program than at Olympics past.

The number of weight categories per gender was reduced to five, and the number of participants per event reduced to 12. As a result, the A Group/B Group competition format has been scrapped in favor of a single-group system.

The United States brings an exciting team of lifters to Paris, including multiple medal contenders. Olivia Reeves comes off a bronze-medal performance at last year's world championships and is a favorite in the women's 71kg weight class. Jourdan Delacruz returns to the Games after narrowly missing the podium in Tokyo. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Hampton Morris recently became the first American man to break a senior weightlifting world record since 1969, and is set to become the youngest U.S. Olympic weightlifter since 2000.

A living legend also heads to Paris looking to make more history, as Georgian great Lasha Talakhadze, arguably the greatest weightlifter to ever live, looks to clinch a third consecutive gold medal in the men's superheavyweight category.
