LeBron James and Team USA begin their quest for a sixth straight gold, Simone Biles returns to the Olympic stage after a withdrawal from competition in Tokyo, and the U.S. women's soccer team takes on Germany. Elsewhere, fencer Lee Kiefer tries to defend her historic Olympic gold, and world record-holders Leon Marchand of France and Gretchen Walsh compete in the pool.

The U.S. tips off men's group play with a Group C showdown against Serbia, the team it beat for Rio gold. Never strangers to immense external pressure, this talented American squad seeks a fifth straight and 17th overall gold.

Collectively, Team USA boasts four NBA MVP award winners, seven NBA champions and three NBA Finals MVP winners.

Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James, 39, returns for the first time since the 2012 London Games, while Kevin Durant, the U.S.'s all-time leading scorer in Olympic play, eyes a record fourth men's basketball gold. Two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry makes his Olympic debut at age 36.

A familiar foe challenges the U.S. in three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Serbia is back after missing the Tokyo Games, and while The Joker's presence makes them a medal contender, the team finished runner-up without him at last year's FIBA World Cup.

Simone Biles makes her Paris debut in the women’s qualifying round with teammates Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera.

Gymnastics' most decorated athlete of all time, Biles has 37 global titles to her name, including four Olympic golds, and surely would have added more in Tokyo if it weren't for a rare finals withdrawal.

Chiles claimed team silver in Tokyo and is the 2022 world vault champion and floor silver medalist; Lee won all-around gold, team silver and bars bronze in Tokyo; Carey captured floor gold in Tokyo; and Rivera, Team USA's youngest athlete in any sport at these Games, makes her Olympic debut.

At age 27, Biles could become the oldest women’s all-around gold medalist since 1952. Any medal makes her the oldest U.S. woman to win an Olympic gymnastics medal since 1948.

The USWNT and Germany compete in group play, each coming off 3-0 openers against Zambia and Australia, respectively.

In the matchup with Zambia, U.S. forward Mallory Swanson netted two goals and captain Lindsey Horan tallied two assists.

After the Americans won three straight golds from 2004 to 2012, the Germans took over at the 2016 Rio Games. Together the two nations own 10 Olympic medals and six World Cups.

Americans Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske are the favorites to go 1-2 in the 100m butterfly. At U.S. Trials, Walsh broke the event's world record from 2016 and Huske became the third-fastest all-time.

The two most recent world champions, Angelina Kohler of Germany and Zhang Yufei of China, are also in the mix.

Leon Marchand of France looks to put on a masterclass in the 400m individual medley. The 22-year-old took down Michael Phelps' final-standing individual world record by 1.34 seconds at 2023 Worlds, beating the rest of the field by more than four seconds. He's trained by Phelps' former coach Bob Bowman.

Americans Carson Foster and Chase Kalisz aren't likely to be near Marchand but have great odds to find the podium.

China's Qin Haiyang swept the 2023 Worlds individual breaststroke events, including the 100m, where his quest to double in Paris begins. Reigning world champion Nic Fink of the U.S. vies for his first-ever Olympic medal.

Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes, one of two strong women's pairings for the U.S., begin their Paris campaign with a Pool C matchup against Czechia's Barbora Hermannova and Marie-Sara Stochlova.

The California natives played together as collegians at USC, capturing the NCAA's first two women's beach volleyball titles.

They parted ways during the Tokyo Olympic cycle before reuniting in 2022, and in 2023 won the world title, taking down No. 1-ranked Brazilians Duda and Ana Patricia.

The U.S. has won gold in women's beach volleyball at five of the last six Games.

Lee Kiefer made history in the Tokyo individual foil, taking down the Rio champion in the final to become only the third American to win Olympic fencing gold. 

This time it's Kiefer, who has claimed bronze at the past two world championships, on the title defense. It's her versus the Italians who occupied the three other medal spots at 2023 Worlds: Alice Volpi, Arianna Errigo and Martina Favaretto.

Errigo gave birth to twins via cesarean section just four months prior to that competition.

In the men's individual epee, reigning world champion Mate Koch of Hungary is the favorite.

The U.S. Olympic women's rugby team opens its competition with hopes to journey past the quarterfinals after exiting during that round at both the Rio and Tokyo Games.

Ilona Maher leads the squad with fellow veterans Lauren Doyle, Naya Tapper, Kristi Kirshe and Alev Kelter.

Australia, New Zealand and France are favorites. The U.S. has yet to win a women's rugby medal.

• Host nation France, led by two-time reigning world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, could grab the top two spots in women's mountain biking. American Haley Batten is also a contender (8:10 a.m. ET).
• Japanese judoka siblings Hifumi Abe and Uta Abe made history in Tokyo winning gold medals on the same day, and they could do it again in Paris in half lightweight. Hifumi in 66 kg, Uta in 52 kg (10 a.m. ET).
• Brazilian skateboarder Rayssa Leal, who raked in Tokyo silver at age 13, attempts to break up a potential Japanese sweep in women's street (11 a.m. ET).
• In archery, the women's team event may already belong to South Korea, which has won all nine golds in the event's history. Casey Kaufhold and the U.S. team are outside contenders (11:11 a.m. ET).
• Canoe slalom legend Jessica Fox of Australia seeks an elusive gold in the K-1 event after earning two bronzes and silver at the last three Games (11:45 a.m. ET).
• Surfing is scheduled to continue in Tahiti with the second round of the women's event. All three Americans have already secured a bye into Round 3, but Tatiana Weston-Webb and Molly Picklum still have work left to do (1 p.m. ET).
• Round 2 of the men's surfing contest will include Jack Robinson, Filipe Toledo and Kauli Vaast. Both Americans are already into Round 3 (5:45 p.m. ET).
