Each day of the 2024 Paris Olympics, NBC Olympics will run down all sports in action, highlighting major athletes and marquee events. Every event streams live on NBCOlympics.com, Peacock, NBC.com and the NBC Sports app, and many will also air on the TV networks of NBC. Visit the schedule page for full listings.

It's a jam-packed day with multiple Americans in action and vying for medals.

Frederick Richard and the U.S. men's gymnastics team compete in the men's team final, American foilists lunge for men's individual gold, Nyjah Huston takes on a Japanese trio in men's street skateboarding, and swimmers Katie Grimes and Ryan Murphy shoot for historic feats.

Elsewhere, the U.S. women's basketball team faces Japan in its opener — a rematch of the Tokyo final — and tennis legends Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal square off early in a first-rate second-round match.

Below, a full breakdown of the top events and athletes to watch on Day 3.

Swimming

Americans Katie Grimes, Ryan Murphy and Lilly King look to add to Team USA's medal count in swimming, which after Sunday stood at seven.

Grimes, 18, kicks off a historic pool-open water double attempt with the 400m individual medley. The Tokyo Games' youngest U.S. Olympian, Grimes finished runner-up in this event at 2023 Worlds, four seconds behind Summer McIntosh of Canada, who's the world record holder and heavy favorite in Paris.

No woman has ever won an Olympic medal both in the pool and in open water in their career. The 10km open water event takes place Aug. 8.

Unlike the women's 400m IM, the men's 100m backstroke is expected to be a tight race between the respective 2023 and 2022 world champions: Murphy, the gold medalist from Rio, and Italy's Thomas Ceccon, the current world record holder. Murphy edged Ceccon at 2023 Worlds by five hundredths of a second and is attempting to become the first to win six individual backstroke medals.

In previous rounds in Paris, Murphy placed fourth in the heats and fifth in the semis, while Ceccon finished 12th and second.

King, likely competing at her last Games, is the 100m breaststroke world record-holder and 2016 gold medalist. She finished fourth at both 2022 and 2023 Worlds. No swimmer has ever won this event twice, and the event's 2023 world champion is currently sidelined, but China's Tang Qianting is the favorite after knocking on the door of King's world record this April.

In the 200m freestyles, Romaninan teenager David Popovici is the men's favorite, while Aussies Mollie O’Callaghan and Ariarne Titmus are set to clash on the women's side.

Gymnastics

The U.S. men contend for bronze in the team event final despite an underperforming qualification round from star Brody Malone.

Overall, the Americans fared well in Friday's qualifying, placing fifth, a few points behind Great Britain and Ukraine. But Malone struggled, falling three times — twice on high bar — and is not expected to make any of the individual finals, with narrow chances that exist in rings and parallel bars. In Tokyo, Malone finished just off the high bar podium in fourth, then won the event's world title in 2022. Now in Paris, it appears his only shot at a medal will be in this team event.

Malone's teammate Frederick Richard took bronze in the 2023 Worlds all-around at age 19, the first time the U.S. earned such a medal since 2010. They'll join Paul Juda, Asher Hong and Stephen Nedoroscik in seeking the first U.S. Olympic medal in men's team since 2008.

China and Japan, the event's two most recent world champions, topped qualifying. They're led by 2021 world all-around champion Zhang Boheng and defending all-around gold medalist Daiki Hashimoto, who like Malone didn't compete well in qualifying.

Basketball

The U.S. women's basketball team begins its quest for an eighth straight title with a Group C matchup against surprise Tokyo silver medalist Japan.

Nothing's changed this cycle as the Americans are once again favored to win. Their roster includes nine players with Olympic golds, eight WNBA champions and three WNBA MVPs.

If the team completes the eight-peat, it would set an Olympic team sport record.

Skateboarding

American Nyjah Huston is back to avenge a seventh-place men's skateboard street finish in Tokyo, where compatriot Jagger Eaton took bronze while skating on a broken ankle. But the two have their work cut out for them against a dominant trio of skaters from Japan: defending gold medalist Yuto Horigome, 14-year-old prodigy Ginwoo Onodera and reigning world champion Sora Shirai.

Both Horigome and Huston faced adversity in qualifying for these Olympics. Horigome almost missed out amid intense national competition, winning the final qualifier in June to secure his spot, while Huston won three qualifier events following an August 2022 fall in which he tore his ACL, partially tore his meniscus and fractured his tibia.

Men's skateboard street was originally scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to slick course conditions and rain.

Tennis

It's perhaps as good a second-round matchup as it gets. Novak Djokovic versus Rafael Nadal.

With 46 major championship titles between each other, these legends have familiar resumes, except there's one big difference: Nadal is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, having won singles in 2008 and doubles in 2016, while Djokovic only has a singles bronze from 2008.

Fencing

The Americans have come so close to winning gold in men's individual foil it hurts. They've had the No. 1-ranked foilist in five of the past 11 seasons, a silver in Rio, yet the gold has evaded them.

In Paris, the nation brings three California natives to finally finish out the mission: five-time Olympian Gerek Meinhardt, Rio silver medalist Alexander Massialas and two-time world individual medalist Nick Itkin, who has been the most consistent among the trio.

Itkin finished 12th in Tokyo, and following his two world medals earned his first career Grand Prix win this past March.

France's Enzo Lefort could spoil the foil fun for the U.S. The two-time world champion won team foil silver in Rio and gold in Tokyo.

Two-time reigning world champion Misaki Emura of Japan is the favorite in women's individual sabre, with Frenchwoman Sara Balzer hoping to upset at home.

Shooting

American Mary Tucker is a medal contender in air rifle. The Florida native placed sixth in Tokyo and won two medals at 2022 Worlds before undergoing knee surgery last summer.

She'll be joined by compatriot Sagen Maddalena, who's also a threat. Seventeen-year-old Huang Yuting of China is the favorite.

On the men's side, it's another young Chinese athlete expected to win in 19-year-old Sheng Lihao.

American Boyd Martin, who entered Paris as the world No. 2, is a medal contender in the individual eventing in his fourth Games. He won a silver at 2022 Worlds in the team event.

Defending Olympic gold medalist Great Britain is the favorite in team eventing.
