Through two days of competition, the silver and bronze medalists in the Tokyo Olympics are both atop Groups A and B in the women’s water polo standings.

Spain, second place finishers in Tokyo, is 2-0 thanks to an upset of Team USA on Monday. Through two games, the Spanish squad looks like the class of the field as they've scored more goals than any other team (28) and defensively has allowed the fewest (17). Spain will get a day off for Day 3 of competition.

The U.S. (1-1) is second behind Spain in the Group B standings, followed by France (1-1), Italy (0-1), and Greece (0-1).

The Netherlands, bronze winner in Tokyo and 2023 world champions, are the only 2-0 squad in Group A. Hungary (1-1), Australia (1-0), Canada (0-1), and China (0-2) round out the Group A standings.

Teams have three games remaining before the quarterfinals. The top four squads in each group will move on.

Here’s a look at all four games scheduled for Day 3 of competition.

Australia is coming off a break on Day 2 following a 7-5 win over China to open the Paris tournament. The Aussies' seven goals marked the fewest of any winning team so far. Three of those seven scores came courtesy of Abby Andrews.

Canada has also played just one game, a 12-7 loss to Hungary on Monday. 

Greece and Italy both had early tournament off-days, so Wednesday will be both team’s second game as they each fight for their first wins.

The Greeks, fourth place finishers at the most recent world championships, fell to Team USA, 15-6, on Day 1. Italy, bronze medalists at the 2023 worlds, dropped a close contest to France, 9-8, on Day 2. 

The U.S. played one of its worst defensive games in four Olympics in Monday’s 13-11 loss to Spain. It was the most goals the team has allowed since the first game of the 2012 Olympics. Even with the loss, Team USA is still second among all teams in the field with 26 goals in two games, and they’ve allowed the second fewest goals on any team with 19. Jenna Flynn has five goals in Paris, one of nine Americans with multiple scores through two games. Keeper Ashleigh Johnson also leads all goalies in Paris with 23 saves.

The Americans face off against a French team that won for the first time in Olympic history on Monday when they defeated Italy, 9-8, in a come-from-behind victory. France, playing in the Olympics for the first time, has allowed the most goals of any team in Paris (23), and scored the fewest (15). They’re the only team to have played two games and not reached double-digit goals in either contest. Nineteen-year-old Juliette Dhalluin is second among all women in Paris with six goals in two games. 

Hungary is tied for the fewest goals allowed through two games of these Olympics (17), but still sits 1-1 as they prepare for a contest against winless China.

Hungary’s Vanda Valyi is one of just four players in Paris with at least five goals.
