The second round of the Olympic men's golf competition was Friday at Le Golf National. Here's how Day 2 of the 72-hole event played out...

Xander Schauffele (USA), Hideki Matsuyama (JPN) and Tommy Fleetwood (GBR) share the lead through 36 holes of the Olympic men's golf competition. The three stand at 11 under par at Le Golf National.

Schauffele, the defending gold medalist, shot 5-under 66 on Friday while Matsuyama double-bogeyed the 18th hole for a 68 and Fleetwood fired a 64.

Spain's Jon Rahm is alone in third place at 9 under following a 66.

Chinese Taipei's C.T. Pan was a surprise bronze-medal winner in the 2020 Tokyo Games, where he closed in 63 and won a 7-for-1 playoff. He's back in the medal mix this year, thanks to a 6-under 65 that got him to 8 under par and three back when he finished his round — a round that concluded with a 60-foot birdie putt.

Rahm birdied three in a row near the start of his round and three in a row near the end, en route to a 5-under 66. At 9 under par, the Spaniard was two back of clubhouse leader Xander Schauffele.

Rahm put circles on his card on Nos. 2, 3 and 4, added a square at the eighth, and then circled Nos. 14-16.

Playing alongside American Schauffele, the defending gold medalist and the reigning Open champion, as well as Norway's Viktor Hovland, Rahm said he felt buoyed by the crowd support.

"The French crowd and Spanish crowd had a great reaction which was a lot of fun to be a part of and, in general throughout the day, the support was mind-blowing," Rahm said. "Makes me really happy to perform well for them and on a stage like this."

McIlroy made his second eagle in as many days, this time on the par-5 third hole, where his 260-yard approach shot was nearly jarred. McIlroy converted the putt to reach 5 under par, where he remained, six back, through 13 holes after trading two birdies for two bogeys.

Schauffele (USA) more than offset a couple of bogeys, making seven birdies for a 5-under 66 in Round 2. The reigning gold medalist was the clubhouse leader at 11 under par when he signed his card.

The two-time major winner hit the range after his round but didn't appear overly concerned when he talked to the media.

"I mean, when you're in good form, all of us know that it's all about just making the correct decision and executing the shot and rinse and repeating that process," he said. "So, don't let too much try and bother you, and if you do hit a bad shot, it's easier to accept it because you know you're playing really good golf and you can make it up somewhere else. In that sort of zone, I guess."
