The men's handball tournament wrapped up six preliminary-round matches on Friday. Details from each game of the session are below.
Group B: Hungary vs. Denmark
Denmark is continuing its impressive campaign at the Paris Olympics following its 28-25 win over Hungary. That's now four straight wins for the Danish, who remain perfect in group stage play.
It wasn't an easy match by any means for Denmark. Hungary was able to stay within reach throughout the match, but Denmark proved it could outlast an opponent. And when you have players like Mathias Gidsel on your side, who scored eight goals in the match, it might just be enough for Denmark to edge any team throughout the tournament.
Hungary has one more match to play, but the only way it can advance is with a win in conjunction with losses from France and Egypt.
Group B: Argentina vs. France
France cruised to a 28-21 win against Argentina to keep its hopes of qualifying to the quarterfinals alive.
Both teams took almost an equal amount of shots, but France goalkeeper Vincent Gerard was able to save an impressive 46% of shots. Hugo Descat's eight goals also led the host nation to a crucial win.
The result eliminates Argentina from the tournament, while France just needs a tie or win to advance.
Group A: Croatia vs. Sweden
In what has most likely been the surprise match of the tournament, Sweden dominated medal favorite Croatia in a 38-27 win.
Sweden, which would've been on the brink of elimination with a loss, played like a team with everything on the line. That motivation allowed the team to cruise to a win, and even put up a whopping 20 points in the second half while Lucas Pellas logged nine goals.
Croatia impressed in the opening five minutes, but that's the about only positive the team can take away from the match.
The result dramatically shakes up things in Group A. Sweden now tops the group, but all teams from first through fifth are tied with four points.
Group A: Germany vs. Spain
Germany survived Spain in an electrifying matchup Friday morning, going toe-to-toe with a Group A opponent and squeaking by with the win.
Germany outscored the Spanish narrowly in the first period, entering halftime with a two-goal lead. The Spanish then mounted a furious second half comeback, tying up the game at 31 goals each with just two minutes left. A pair of last-minute goals by Julian Koster and Johannes Golla put the Germans on top.
It was a tough loss for Spain, and for Aleix Gomez, who did his part to lead his team with 10 goals.
With the victory, Germany jumped to the top of Group A, while Spain sat down in fourth place.
Men's Group A: Japan vs. Slovenia
Slovenia prevailed, 29-28, in a tight battle against Japan at South Paris Arena.
Japan took an early three-goal lead over Slovenia, but Slovenia fought back to tie the score at nine goals apiece. Both teams continued to compete back and forth in an evenly-matched battle. The teams entered halftime tied at 15-15.
Slovenia and Japan exchanged points back-and-forth throughout in a tight second set. With two minutes left, Slovenia managed a three-point lead and it was able to just hang on to secure a thrilling victory.
Slovenia's Aleks Vlah continued his strong Olympics with an incredible team-leading 14 goals scored throughout the match. Slovenia will advance to the quarterfinals to continue its pursuit for gold, while Japan will not advance to the quarterfinals.
Men's Group B: Norway vs. Egypt
Egypt got a massive win over Norway, 26-25, to lock in a spot in the quarterfinals.
These two teams were evenly matched the entire contest and took it down to the final second at South Paris Arena.
With 15 seconds left and a one-goal lead, Egypt turned the ball over to Norway.
Simen Ulstad Lyse got a shot off with time expiring, but Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Aly put his body directly in the path of the ball to preserve the win.
Yahia Omar led Egypt with seven goals on nine shots. Harald Reinkind produced the same numbers for Norway.
That was Norway's first loss in preliminary play, so the squad is set to move into the quarterfinals alongside Egypt and Denmark out of Group B.
