After several upsets in the Olympic men’s individual sabre competition, countries are aiming for redemption in the team event on July 31. Here’s what to watch for.
The Hungarian team has one of the best shots at winning a sabre medal at the Paris Olympics. Three-time men’s individual sabre Olympic champion Aron Szilagyi is leading the team and he's eager for a win. His attempt at an individual medal ended in a major upset against Canadian Fares Arfa, so Szilagyi is looking to bounce back in the team event.
“We will watch my match again to understand what really happened,” Szilagyi said of his performance.
Egypt is also looking to jump onto the podium after world No. 2 Ziad Elsissy finished fourth in the individual event after an emotional match with Italian Luigi Samele. Host country France could shake up the field after missing out on a medal in Tokyo.
Despite this, South Korea remains the gold medal favorite as the defending two-time Olympic champion. South Korean Oh Sang-Uk also won the Olympic gold medal in the individual event.
The American team consisting of three-time Olympian Eli Dershwitz, Mitchell Saron, Colin Heathcock, and replacement athlete Filip Dolegiewicz has shown promise over the past year. They finished third at the 2023 World Fencing Championships. The team members are all Harvard University graduates except for Heathcock, who is enrolled to start his freshman year in the fall.
