After 15 magnificent days of thrilling victory, agonizing defeat and unity among nations from across the globe, competition wraps up at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Team USA women’s basketball (A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart), volleyball (Annie Drews, Kathryn Plummer) and cyclist Jennifer Valente all attempt to repeat titles from Tokyo — for basketball, it'd be a historic eighth-straight gold.

Below, a full breakdown of the top events and athletes to watch on Day 16 ahead of the Closing Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Basketball

The American women face France in the final event of the Paris Olympics, a day after the U.S. men defeated the host nation 98-87.

It's a rematch of the 2012 London Olympics (won by the U.S. 86-59), and the first time the same two nations have played for gold in both tournaments at the same Games. The U.S. has swept every Olympics since the 2008 Beijing Games.

Superstars A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart have played brilliant in Paris, averaging 18 or more points per game and ranking second and third in efficiency scores. Wilson is also averaging 9.6 rebounds per game and 2.4 blocks per game.

A U.S. win would complete an eight-peat and set an Olympic team sport record, breaking a tie with the U.S. men's seven straight from 1936 to 1968. It would give them 61 straight wins, two away from the Games basketball record of 63.

France has had consistent success over the past three Games; in addition to the silver in London, it finished fourth in Rio and took bronze in Tokyo.

Track and Field

It's the women's turn to battle Paris' treacherous marathon course, and they'll do it on the 40-year anniversary of the first-ever Olympic women's marathon, won by legend Joan Benoit Samuelson at the 1984 LA Games.

Ethiopian Tigst Assefa shattered the world record last year in Berlin (2:11:53) and enters Paris with the fifth-fastest time this year from April's London Marathon.

Defending Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya beat Assefa in London, and ranks slightly ahead in fourth.

World No. 9 Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands seeks a rare distance medal triple having already won two bronze medals on the track in the 5000m and 10,000m.

The Americans are U.S. Trials winner Fiona O'Keeffe, 2022 Chicago runner-up Emily Sisson and Minnesotan Dakotah Lindwurm.
