U.S. men's soccer takes on Morocco in its first Olympic quarterfinal since 2000, track and field competition gets underway with Sha'Carri Richardson and Ryan Crouser, and U.S. equestrian vaults toward the jumping team podium.

In the pool, Caeleb Dressel attempts to defend his Olympic title in the splash-and-dash 50m freestyle, Regan Smith and Phoebe Bacon shoot for the podium in the 200m backstroke, and French phenom Leon Marchand aims to add a fourth gold to his collection. Meanwhile, U.S. rowing tries to keep the good vibes flowing in the women's pair and lightweight double sculls.

Below, a full breakdown of the top events and athletes to watch on Day 7.

Swimming

American Caeleb Dressel is back in the water to defend his gold in the men's 50m freestyle. The two-time world champion broke the event's Olympic record in Tokyo for a third individual title at those Games.

In Paris he'll be a slight underdog to 2023 and 2022 world champions Cameron McEvoy of Australia and Ben Proud of Great Britain, who've crowded the event's podium at worlds in Dressel's absence.

Already with one gold from opening night's 4x100m free relay, Dressel placed fifth overall in Thursday's semifinals, while Proud and McEvoy clocked the same exact time for the top two spots.

Team USA's Regan Smith already has two silvers in Paris in the 100m backstroke and 200m butterfly, and she'd love to find a gold in the 200m backstroke, an event in which she once held the world record.

That world record now belongs to Australia's Kaylee McKeown, the double backstroke gold medalist from Tokyo who's already defended her 100m title against Smith.

Smith's teammate Phoebe Bacon, the 2022 world silver medalist, topped Thursday's semifinals, registering a faster time than McKeown from a separate heat. Regan finished sixth overall.

In the men's 200m individual medley, the spotlight once again turns to France's Leon Marchand, owner of three golds so far in Paris in the 200m breast, 200m fly and 400m IM, which he won by nearly six seconds.

If someone's to upset the 22-year-old phenom, it could be American Carson Foster. Runner-up to Marchand at 2022 Worlds, Foster took bronze in Sunday's 400 IM final and was only sixth hundredths of a second away overall in Thursday's semifinals.

Soccer

Quarterfinals take place in the men's tournament, with a U.S. team still very alive in its first Games appearance since 2008.

It's the U.S. men's first quarterfinal since their fourth-place finish at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. They'll be led by defender Walker Zimmerman and midfielders Djordje Mihailovic and Kevin Paredes.

Their opponent is Morocco, led by Soufiane Rahimi, the tournament’s top goalscorer.

The other three quarterfinals feature Japan vs. Tokyo silver medalist Spain; Egypt vs. Paraguay; and France vs. Argentina.

Rowing

A day after winning its first Olympic medal since Rio, the U.S. rowing team looks to add more hardware in both the women's pair and lightweight double sculls.

Americans Azja Czajkowski and Jessica Thoennes entered Paris as outside contenders in the pair, and have only competed together in the event since May's World Cup II, where they finished sixth.

That didn't seem to matter in Wednesday's semifinals as they posted the fourth-best overall time behind reigning world champion Dutchwomen Ymkje Clevering and Veronique Meester, Romania and Australia.

Clevering and Meester are the clear favorites, having topped Wednesday's semifinals by nearly four seconds, but the semifinals result gives the U.S. promise in making the podium.

In the women's lightweight double sculls, two-time reigning world silver medalist Michelle Sechser reunites with Molly Reckford, with whom she finished fifth in Tokyo and took silver at 2022 Worlds.

The American duo didn't have the greatest first rounds, clocking the eighth-best time of the heats and the seventh-best time of the semis, barely squeezing into Final A.

They'll attempt to win the U.S. its first medal in the event since the 2000 Sydney Games, while Great Britain looks to continue an unbeaten streak that's been active since a fourth-place finish in Tokyo.

Defending gold medalists Valent and Martin Sinkovic of Croatia will be challenged in the men's pair by Brits Ollie Wynne-Griffith and Tom George, who are undefeated this year.

The U.S. duo of Billy Bender and Oliver Bub placed last in their semifinal Wednesday and will compete in Final B.

Ireland's Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan got off to a slow start this year but are still favorites in the men's lightweight double sculls. The defending Olympic gold medalists and three-time reigning world champions proved that in Paris with the fastest time in the semifinals.

Track and Field

Road competition began Thursday with the walks, but true track and field competition begins Friday with a host of events.

Headlining the day is the first final on the track in the men's 10,000m.

Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei, world record-holder at both 10,000m and 5000m, was upset in Tokyo by Ethiopia's Selemon Barega who robbed him of gold by closing in a blistering 53.92 quarter-mile. Cheptegei went on to win the 5K but undoubtedly seeks redemption in this event. Since Tokyo he's extended his world title streak to three straight, the fourth man to ever accomplish that feat.

Barega, who held the world No. 2 ranking last year, looks to become the fourth straight to win back-to-back 10,000m golds following compatriot legends Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele, and Brit legend Mo Farah.

Don't sleep on American Grant Fisher. The American-record holder looked phenomonal at U.S. Trials, winning his first national title, and is a strategic racer.

Reigning world champion Sha'Carri Richardson (women's 100m), competing at her first Olympics, and two-time defending gold medalist Ryan Crouser (men's shot put) both attempt to advance to their respective next rounds.

Other events on the schedule of note: Day 1 of men's decathlon, men's 1500m heats, women's 5000m heats and women's discus qualifying.

Equestrian

The U.S. has taken silver home in team jumping at the past two Games. Entering Paris, the team wasn't expected to make the podium again, but the tables have turned after an impressive qualification Thursday.

Laura Kraut and Baloutinue, McLain Ward and Ilex, and Karl Cook and Caracole de la Roque combined for a time of 227.57 with six penalties to rank second, finishing about two seconds behind Germany.

Cook, the traveling reserve, replaced Kent Farrington and Greya pre-competition due to allergy concerns.

Ward was a member of the Rio and Tokyo silver teams, as well as the Olympic champion Athens and Beijing squads. Kraut, 58, was also on the Tokyo team. She made her debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney, and is still competing 24 years later as a grandmother.

Defending gold medalist Sweden is the favorite coming in, having both won the 2022 world title and 2023 FEI European Jumping Championships. The team placed eighth in Thursday's qualifying.

BMX Racing

In Thursday's quarterfinals, a trio of women were undefeated in their three heats: 2024 world champion Alise Willoughby (United States), defending Olympic gold medalist Bethany Shriever (Great Britain), and two-time reigning World Cup season champion Saya Sakakibara (Australia). Expect an exciting battle when these three return to the track for semifinals (which consist of two heats and three runs) and the one-run, winner-take-all final.

On the men's side, French riders finished with the top three point totals in the quarterfinals and will be difficult to beat in the final rounds. Don't count out the Americans though — Kamren Larsen and Cameron Wood finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the quarterfinal standings.
