On Monday, the United States men's gymnastics team won bronze in the all-around team final — the first medal for the U.S. men's team in 16 years (bronze, 2008 Beijing Games). Tuesday in Paris featured just 12 medal events —  the fewest of any day in Paris — but there were still many important takeaways. 

Here's what you should know from Day 4 of competition.

The U.S. women's gymnastics team is back on top of the Olympic podium after winning gold in the team final on Tuesday. 

Simone Biles now has eight Olympic medals, including five gold, surpassing Shannon Miller to become the most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast in history. 

Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera became the fourth American team to win an Olympic gold medal in this event.

The U.S. rolled through the team final, nailing nearly all their routines. Even with a stumble by Chiles during the third rotation on beam, they still began the final rotation with a lead of over 3.5 points. A trio of great floor routines cemented the gold, which they won by 5.802 points. Team USA had the highest score in all four apparatus.

Italy won silver to earn its first Olympic medal in this event in 96 years. Brazil took home the bronze — its first Olympic team medal in history.

The U.S. women's rugby team played spoiler to Australia, scoring as time expired to win, 14-12, and earn the bronze medal in dramatic fashion. This is the best finish ever for a U.S. women's rugby team at the Olympics. 

After defeating Great Britain on Monday, Team USA advanced to the semifinals. The U.S. lost in the quarterfinals in Rio and Tokyo, so the win marked the first time that the program reached the semifinals.

Earlier on Tuesday, the U.S. women's rugby team delivered a valiant effort, but fell short to New Zealand, 24-12, in the semifinals to set up the bronze medal match vs. Australia. 

The last time the U.S. won a medal in rugby was when the men's team won gold at the 1924 Paris Olympics, 100 years ago (women's rugby made its Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Games).

The U.S. women have drawn attention from many, including none other than former NFL player Jason Kelce.

Coco Gauff fell to No. 2 Donna Vekic, 7-6, 6-2, on Tuesday in an emotional and controversial match.

During the second set, Gauff was on service when Vekic returned a forehand shot that a line judge called out as Gauff was striking the ball. The call appeared to cause Gauff to hit the net. After Gauff made contact, the chair umpire called for a correction to the out call, making Vekic's shot in, and Gauff's return shot a fault.

Gauff debated the call with the umpire before returning to the court, but she never quite found her rhythm again.

MATCH STATS

After 24 years, the U.S. men's soccer team will once again play a quarterfinal match at an Olympic Games. Team USA clinched its spot in the knockout round following its 3-0 victory over Guinea. 

The Americans put up an impressive display in Tuesday's match, commanding the game from the first whistle with Djordje Mihailovic scoring first in the 14th minute. Kevin Paredes added a pair of goals to seal the Yanks' victory.

The United States will face Morocco on Friday, Aug. 2 at 9 a.m. ET. Morocco, which is led by Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi, has impressed so far after defeating Argentina in a controversial 2-1 opener and putting three goals past Iraq on the final group-stage matchday.

After missing the podium entirely in Tokyo for the men's 4x200 freestyle relay, the United States made an epic comeback to win silver in Paris. The silver medal is also the 25th Olympic medal for Team USA in the event, marking a major milestone of dominance for the program.

Great Britain defended its Olympic title in the event with gold while the Australian team repeated as bronze medalists.

One of the highly anticipated matchups of the Paris swimming program kicked off with American Regan Smith taking on Kaylee McKeown of Australia in the women's 100m backstroke. Together, the pair own the 15 fastest times in the event's history.

On Tuesday evening, the final certainly delivered in a thrilling fashion. McKeown bested Smith, American Katharine Berkoff and Canada's Kylie Masse to repeat as the event's gold medalist. Smith's confidence entering the event wasn't enough to outlast a speedy McKeown, who posted a 55.33.

Earlier on Tuesday, American Katie Ledecky competed in the women's 1500m freestyle prelims, finishing in first with a time of 15:47.43 to secure her spot in the final. She'll compete for the podium on Wednesday, July 31, at 3:07 p.m. ET.

• Hannah Roberts, the silver medalist in BMX freestyle in Tokyo, opened her second Olympic Games with a strong performance in the women's BMX freestyle qualifier, posting a field-best 91.45 average to advance into the final.
• The U.S. men's water polo team defeated Romania, 14-8, to secure its first victory of the Paris Games.
• The first games of pool play in men's and women's 3x3 basketball tipped off on Tuesday. The U.S. women lost to Germany, 17-13, and the men lost to Serbia, 22-14.
• In a tough judo bracket, Andreja Leski won gold in the women's half middleweight event. Leski's win is Slovenia's first medal of the Paris Olympic Games. 
• Japan's Takanori Nagase repeated as gold medalist in the judo men's half middleweight event. With the win, Japan has now won a medal in all four men's judo events contested thus far in Paris (two gold, two bronze).
• China won gold in table tennis' mixed doubles category. The victory marks China's first gold in the event after it debuted at the Tokyo Games.
