Here's what you should know from the eighth day of competition at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games:

• Oksana Masters defended her H5 road race crown from the Tokyo Paralympics to claim back-to-back gold medals. Between Summer and Winter Paralympic Games, Masters has now amassed 19 medals.
• Just over a year after losing her foot and part of her leg in a shark attack, Ali Truwit set a new American record to win the silver medal in the women’s 400m freestyle S10 behind Canada’s Aurelie Rivard. Americans Olivia Chambers and Colleen Young secured silver and bronze in the women's 100m breaststroke SB13 final, as Great Britain's Rebecca Redfern won gold.
• Team USA collected more medals in para track and field with two medalists on the podium in the women's 100m T37. Taylor Swanson picked up her first Paralympic medal with silver, and Jaleen Roberts grabbed her second medal in Paris — and fourth Paralympic medal overall — with bronze. Noah Malone secured his fifth Paralympic medal with silver in the men's 400m T12, and Brian Siemann earned his second Paris medal with a bronze in the 800m T53 final.
• American para judo athlete Liana Mutia picked up her first Paralympic medal (silver) in the women's 50kg J1.
• Tokyo Paralympic table tennis gold medalist Ian Seidenfeld took home the bronze medal in the men's singles MS6 after falling to Italy's Matteo Parenzan in the semifinal.
• In women's sitting volleyball, the U.S. — eyeing its third consecutive gold medal — dominated the third and fourth sets to take down Brazil in its semifinal match, clinching a spot in the gold medal match vs. China.
• The U.S. men's wheelchair basketball cruised past Canada 80-43 to advance to the gold medal game, where the Americans will vie for a third consecutive Paralympic title. Canada mustered just 11 second-half points in the U.S. triumph.
• In the men's goalball gold medal match, Japan's Yuto Sano scored in overtime to seal a 4-3 Japan victory over Ukraine, winning the gold medal. On the women's side, Turkiye took down Israel 8-3 in the gold medal match to claim its third consecutive women's goalball gold medal. A 7-2 start in the first half set the tone for the victorious Turkish.

The women’s H5 road race came to a thrilling finish with four riders in medal contention going into the final lap. However, after taking the lead with three kilometers to go, Oksana Masters couldn’t be caught.

As she approached the finish line, Masters peered over her shoulder to see where her competitors were before letting out a victorious scream as she realized she would defend her H5 road race crown from the Tokyo Paralympics. This is the ninth Summer Paralympic gold medal of Masters’ epic career and 19th between Summer and Winter.

“I had no idea I had a big finish in me but I was hoping that finish was going to be there,” Masters said. “I was going to pour it all out in that last climb because I knew that was the last chance up and over. My coach was right there saying, ‘Just stay patient and attack on that last climb’ and that’s what I tried to do.”

Although Masters' Paris Paralympics have come to an end, she shared she intends to train for LA 2028.

“My dream is to ignite the passion of cycling and [show] what's possible on the bike with handcycling and grow the women’s field on the bike, especially in the U.S.,” Masters said. “I would love to be there in LA … I would love to be (crossing) the finish line with Team USA athletes and seeing that legacy go on for the future.”

Just over one year after losing her foot and part of her leg in a shark attack, Alexandra Truwit is now a Paralympic medalist.

Truwit set a new American record (4:31.39) to win the silver medal in the women’s 400m freestyle S10 behind Canada’s Aurelie Rivard, who started to pull away from the pack in the final 50m. Hungary’s Bianka Pap took the bronze.

"When I was faced with a life-changing trauma, I worked to see the positive and focus on gratitude and let that carry me," Truwit said. "But I would also say when you are truly faced with death and you understand what a second chance at life means, you want to make the most of it."

The American medals kept coming, as Olivia Chambers and Colleen Young secured silver and bronze in the women's 100m breaststroke SB13 final. Great Britain's Rebecca Redfern won gold in 1:16.02.

On the men's side, China's Guo Jincheng continued to dominate at his debut Paralympics in Paris, earning his fifth medal and third gold. In the men's 50m freestyle S5, Jincheng won gold and set a world record in the process at 29.33 seconds.

Americans Taylor Swanson and Jaleen Roberts both reached the podium in Thursday's women's 100m T37 final, finishing second and third behind China's Wen Xiaoyan, who won gold with a Paralympic record of 12.52 seconds.

Swanson's silver is her first Paralympic medal, and Roberts collected her fourth after claiming long jump silver earlier in the Games. 

The U.S. success continued as Noah Malone claimed the fifth Paralympic medal of his career with a silver in the men's 400m T12 final. Morocco's Mouncef Bouja won the gold, and Tunisia's Rouay Jebabli took home the bronze.

"This has been a battle mentally every race, especially in the 400m, so to walk away with a fifth Paralympic medal at 22 is pretty good," Malone said. "It has been a rollercoaster ride. A lot of ups, a lot of downs, a lot of exciting and stressful moments.

But you have to enjoy it because not everyone can be here, and not everyone medals, so it is a win.

The men's goalball gold medal match between Japan and Ukraine came down to a nail-biting sudden-death overtime, and Japan's Yuto Sano delivered the final blow.

With the score tied 3-3 in overtime, Sano delivered a gold medal-winning goal to secure a 4-3 Japan victory over Ukraine and clinch the gold medal.

In the women's gold medal match, Turkiye stormed out to a 7-2 start and held off Israel for an 8-3 win, securing the Paralympic gold medal. The Paralympic title is Turkiye's third straight, dating back to the 2016 Rio Games.
