Who is not competing for the U.S. soccer teams in Paris?

Compared to its 2020 Olympic roster, 11 players will not return to the Games for the women’s team, further signaling the USWNT is continuing its generational shift. Former players Julie Ertz, Sam Mewis, Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe have retired within the last three years, while Kelley O'Hara plans to retire from the sport after the 2024 NWSL Season. Players like Tobin Heath and Christen Press have been sidelined for nearly two years due to injuries and were not in contention to make the 2024 Olympic team. Adrianna Franch, Abby Dahlkemper, Kristie Mewis and Becky Sauerbrunn — who captained the USWNT at the Tokyo Olympics — also did not get called up, but the most surprising exclusion was that of Alex Morgan. She ranks in the top 10 in USWNT history in goals (123), assists (53), appearances (223) and this summer would have been her fourth Olympic Games.

Another comparison to the 2020 Olympic roster for the women's team is that the 2024 Olympic team has an average age of 26.8, whereas at the Tokyo Games, the average age was 30.8. The players going to the Paris Olympics will also be the youngest U.S. women's team since the 2008 Beijing Games.

Who is playing in their first Olympic soccer matches in Paris?

More than half of the players for the women's team will be first-time Olympians at the Paris Games. Most, however, already have experience competing at international tournaments after participating in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. The full list of players who will make their Olympic debuts this summer is listed below.

  • Emily Fox
  • Naomi Girma
  • Jenna Nighswonger
  • Korbin Albert
  • Sam Coffey
  • Trinity Rodman
  • Jaedyn Shaw
  • Sophia Smith
  • Casey Murphy

Who are the alternate players for the U.S. soccer teams in Paris?

For the women's team, head coach Emma Hayes named four alternate players who will travel to France with the team: Jane Campbell, Hal Hershfelt, Croix Bethune and Lynn Williams.
