Pool C: USA 3, Germany 2
Team USA barely escaped an embarrassing loss against Germany after being up two sets and getting forced into a tiebreaking fifth set.
The Americans controlled the first two sets, but a desperate Germany team came back from the brink to force the fifth. The Germans were fresh off upsetting No. 2 Japan and have asserted themselves as a team that cannot be taken lightly in this tournament.

Pool A: Slovenia 3, Serbia 0
Slovenia has quickly gone from overlooked debutants to a real threat to go deep in this tournament after a commanding win over Serbia.
The two teams looked evenly matched in an extremely tight first set that was rarely separated by more than a point or two. Slovenia was just able to find that advantage late in the set as they built a four-point lead and finished things off at 25-21. Toncek Stern came out swinging for the Slovenians with 10 points on his own in the first set on 9/11 attacking.
The second set was a tale of two halves. Serbia controlled early and got out to a 10-6 lead that forced a Slovenia timeout. Whatever head coach, Gheorghe Crețu, told his team at that timeout must have been pretty incredible because his team got it back to 15-12, then went on a run of nine straight points to take a commanding 21-15 lead. From the timeout through the end of the set, Slovenia's run was 19-9 and it all started in the attack. The Slovenians were 16/27 on attacks with Stern adding nine more points in the set. Their next highest scorer through two sets was Tine Urnaut with seven.
The beginning of the third set was extremely tight, with the teams trading 15 consecutive points until Slovenia finally stretched the lead to two at 13-11. From there they took control, slowly widening the lead until they closed it out with a 25-19 win.
Stern finished the night with a ridiculous 25 points in just three sets on an extremely efficient 22/34 attacks. Klemen Cebulj was the next highest scorer for Slovenia with 12 points on 11/20 attacks. Serbia's highest scorer was Marko Ivovic with 10.
With the win Slovenia clinches an appearance in the knockout stages in its first-ever trip to the Olympics. The Slovenians close out pool play against France on Friday at 11 a.m. ET. Serbia now has just one point in pool play and will need a win over Canada on the final matchday to have a shot at the knockout rounds. That match takes place Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
Pool C: France 3, Canada 0
Defending gold medalist France flexed its strength, nailing nine aces in a straight-sets victory over Canada to go to 2-0 in pool play.
Setter Antoine Brizard, 30, tallied six of them himself, drilling four consecutive in the first set to send the home crowd into a celebration frenzy.
Canada kept it close, steered by 10-plus attacks from Stephen Maar and Arthur Szwarc, but France was just too much to handle.
Brizard's haul put France up by six in the first, which it won 25-20. In the second, despite 16 digs from Canada, France pulled away 25-21 with two key blocks from 6-foot-8 Barthelemy Chinenyeze. The host nation closed it out in the third 25-17.
France plays Slovenia at 11 a.m. ET Friday to decide the winner of Pool A, while Canada takes on Serbia at 3 p.m. ET Saturday.
