In one of the most dramatic ways imaginable, Matt Stutzman finally earned his first Paralympic gold medal on Sunday.

Stutzman, known as the "Armless Archer," was born without arms and shoots his bow with his legs and feet. He won a silver medal when he first competed at the Paralympic Games in 2012 in para archery but left Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 without hardware.

At the 2024 Paris Paralympics, however, Stutzman claimed his long-awaited gold medal in the men's compound open, becoming the first archer without arms to win gold in Paralympic history.

The drama began to unfold in the Round of 16, where Stutzman faced the man who beat him for gold in 2012: Finland's Jere Forsberg. Tied at 141 at the end of regulation, the match went to a one-arrow shootoff. After a 10-point shot from Forsberg, Stutzman countered with a perfect bullseye that landed him the win.

"I told myself that if I ever get the opportunity [to face Forsberg] again, I'm not going to let him beat me twice," Stutzman revealed afterward.

Next up in a quarterfinal match against Great Britain's Nathan MacQueen, Stutzman emerged with a narrow 143-142 win.

Later in the day, Stutzman found himself in yet another shootoff — this time in the semifinals against reigning gold medalist He Zihao of China. Both archers shot 148 in regulation, a mark which tied the Paralympic record, and then Stutzman hit a 10-point shot to get the shootoff win.

In the gold medal match, Stutzman made sure that a shootoff wouldn't be needed. He missed just one 10-point shot throughout the five ends, setting a new Paralympic record as he defeated China's Ai Xinliang 149-147.

It was a storybook ending to Stutzman's fourth Paralympics, which he has said will be his last.

"These guys are amazing," Stutzman said of his competitors, "and if I'm going to go out as a gold medalist, I wanted to be against the best in the world."
