Fans of different sports will see thousands of athletes competing for medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer. 

The Games, which run from July 26 through August 11, will have a total of 329 sporting events with about 10,500 athletes from 184 different countries.

With the Paris Olympics being the first Games to achieve full gender parity, there’s plenty of room for nations to be represented for the very first time in history for certain disciplines.

Below is a list of the athletes and teams that will be representing their countries for the first time in different Olympic sports. 

3x3 basketball

Azerbaijan will participate in the women’s 3x3 basketball tournament, marking the first time the country will be represented in a team sport at the Olympics.


Archery

Israel Madaye will be the first man to represent Chad in archery at the Olympics, while Ziyodakhon Abdusattorova will be the first Uzbekistan archer to ever compete at the Games.


Basketball

South Sudan notably qualified for its first-ever Olympic basketball tournament in the men’s competition. The country, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, is the world’s newest nation. 


Boxing

Laura Fuentes will be the first woman from Spain to box at the Olympics, while Ashleyann Lozada is the first Puerto Rican woman to compete in Olympic boxing. 


Breaking

The sport will make its debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics, meaning every athlete will represent their nation for the first time in Olympic breaking. 


Canoeing

Herminia Teixeira will be the first woman from Sao Tome and Principe to compete in the canoe sprint at the Olympics. 


Diving

Victoria Garza will compete at the Olympics in diving, becoming the first woman from the Dominican Republic to do so. 


Fencing

Alexandra Ndolo, 36, will represent Kenya in the women’s fencing competition. It will be the first time the nation has an athlete representing it in Olympic fencing. 


Gymnastics

Lynnzee Brown will represent Haiti in the individual women’s gymnastics competition, while Ahmad Abu Al Soud will represent Jordan in the individual men’s gymnastics competition. Also, Lais Najjar will be representing Syria for the first time in the individual men’s competition, and Turkiye will make its Olympic debut in the men’s team event.


Modern pentathlon

Phurit Yohuang made history by becoming the first Thai athlete to compete in Olympic modern pentathlon, and Andres Torres will be the first athlete to represent Ecuador in Olympic modern pentathlon. 


Rhythmic gymnastics

Mexico will make its debut in the group events for the first time in the country’s Olympic history.


Rowing 

Iran will make its Olympic debut in the women’s lightweight double sculls event.


Rugby

In the men’s tournament, Samoa and Uruguay will make their Olympic debuts. In the women’s tournament, Ireland and South Africa will make their Olympic debuts. 


Shooting

Mohammed Bin Dallah will not only make his Olympic debut in Paris, but he will also be the first-ever athlete to represent Libya in shooting at the Games. He will compete in the men’s 10m air pistol event. 


Skateboarding

Richard Tury will be the first athlete from Slovakia to compete in men’s street along with the Argentine duo of Matias Dell Olio and Mauro Iglesias who will also represent their country for the first time in the same competition. 

Vareeraya Sukasem will be representing Thailand for the first time in women’s street and Aya Asaqas will be the first athlete from Morocco to compete in women’s park.


Soccer

Ukraine, Uzbekistan and the Dominican Republic will play in the men’s tournament for the first time in each country’s history. For the women's, Spain will be playing in its first Olympic soccer tournament this summer. 


Surfing 

Yang Siqi will be the first Olympic surfer representing China, while Camilla Kemp will be the first Olympic surfer representing Germany and Candelaria Resano will be Nicaragua’s first Olympic surfer. On the men’s side, Alan Cleland will be the first Olympic surfer for Mexico and Andy Criere will be Spain’s first Olympic surfer. 


Taekwondo 

Lolohea Navuga Naitasi and Venice Traill will represent Fiji for the first time in Olympic taekwondo. Alasan Ann is the first person to represent Gambia at the Olympics in taekwondo, and Lo Wai Fung will be the first athlete to represent Hong Kong. Omar Ismail is the first athlete from Palestine to compete in Olympic taekwondo.


Triathlon

Jean Gael Laurent L’Entete will be the first man from Mauritius to compete at the Olympics in triathlon, while Eloi Adjavon will be the first athlete from Togo to compete in Olympic triathlon. On the women’s side, Edda Hannesdottir will become the first athlete from Iceland to compete in Olympic triathlon.


Volleyball

In the men’s tournament, Slovenia will be making its Olympic debut, and in the women’s tournament, host nation France will make its Olympic debut.  


Water Polo

Host nation France will compete in the women’s water polo tournament for the first time in its history. 


Weightlifting 

Ajah Pritchard Lolo will not only make her Olympic debut in Paris this summer, but she will also become the first-ever female weightlifter to represent Vanuatu at the Games. 


Wrestling

Ibtissem Doudou will be the first woman wrestler from Algeria to compete at an Olympics and Tayla Ford will be the first woman representing New Zealand in Olympic wrestling. Aktenge Keunimjaeva will also be the first woman to represent Uzbekistan at an Olympic Games in wrestling.
