A look at women's water polo quarterfinal games on Tuesday at the Paris Olympics.
Game 1: Spain 18, Canada 8
Spain was one of only two teams to go through pool play unbeaten, and made its case for being the gold medal favorite in a lopsided win over Canada on Tuesday.
Spain scored at least three goals in each quarter, and went into the half up 10-4. The lead grew to nine in the third as Canada was shut out in the frame.
The 18-goal total marked the most Spain has scored in a single game in Paris, but the fifth straight game it has scored at least 10 goals. Elena Ruiz led Spain with four scores. Paula Crespi and Bea Ortiz added three each.
Five of Canada's eight goals came courtesy of Verica Bakoc. Tuesday was the third time in Paris that Canada has scored in single digits.
The Canadians finish the Paris Games 1-4. Spain moves on to the tournament semifinals where it will take on the Netherlands on Thursday.
Game 2: Netherlands 11, Italy 8
The Netherlands is moving on to the women’s semifinals after a hard-fought win over Italy on Tuesday, 11-8.
It was a relatively slow start for both teams — just two goals each in the first quarter — and an even effort throughout the match.
The Netherlands grabbed the first two-goal lead of the game in the third period with a Brigitte Sleeking shot to go up 6-4. Sleeking scored again with less than five minutes left in the contest, but it was Simone van de Kraats who sealed it for the Netherlands with back-to-back goals in the final two minutes.
This is the deepest run the Netherlands has made at the Olympics since they won gold in 2008 in Beijing. Next up: Spain on Thursday in the semifinals.
Game 3: Australia 9, Greece 6
With a win on Wednesday, Australia, fifth place finishers at the Olympics three years ago, moved on to the semifinals.
A low scoring game in the first quarter took a turn with six total goals scored in the second. Australia went into the half up 4-3.
Bronte Halligan and Alice Williams had two straight goals early in the fourth to push Australia's lead to four, 8-4. Greece responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit in half, but Williams found the net one more time on a power play with 38 seconds remaining to salt the game away.
Williams scored five of her team's seven goals. Halligan had the other two. Eleni Xenaki led Greece with two goals.
The Australians will play the U.S. on Thursday in the semifinals. Greece leaves Paris 1-4 overall.
