In a big upset to start the morning, Italy saw a two-goal halftime lead slip away as France held the Italian squad to just one goal in each of the third and fourth quarters. The win for France was the country's first Olympic victory in women's water polo.

The French team is competing in the Olympic women's water polo competition for the first time, and earned a berth into this year's Games as the host country.

Trailing 7-6 heading into the fourth, Lara Andres scored her second goal of the game to help France tie the score with just under six minutes to play. Ninety seconds later, Juliette Dhalluin put through a penalty shot to give France the lead.

Ema Vernoux scored the final goal for France to go up by two with 3:19 left. Italy scored once more, but was unable to find a tying goal in the final two minutes of play.

Dhalluin led France with three goals. Andres and Vernoux added two goals each, and Mia Rycraw had 11 saves in goal.

Roberta Bianconi led France with two goals.

Monday was Italy's first game in Paris after the team was off on Day 1 of competition.

The second game on Monday's slate in Paris was a rematch of the Tokyo Olympics gold medal game, but Team USA did not get the same winning result they sought.

The U.S. women's water polo team allowed more goals to Spain than it has allowed in any single game over the last three Olympics, falling 13-11.

The Netherlands came back from an 8-5 halftime deficit and held China to just three goals in the third and fourth quarters on the way to a win on Monday.

Netherlands outscored China, 9-2, in the second half to improve to 2-0 in the Paris Games.

Sabrina van der Sloot and Marrtje Keuning led The Netherlands with three goals each. Simone van de Kraats  and Kitty Lynn Joustra added two goals apiece.

Zewen Deng, Sanfeng Nong, and Jing Zhang had two goals each for China (0-2).

Four goals in each of the first and fourth quarters propelled Hungary to its first Paris win on Monday.

The Hungarian's defense held the Canadians to just 30% shooting on the day. 

Greta Gurisatti and Rita Keszthelyi had three goal each for Hungary. Axelle Crevier, Emma Wright, and Hayley McKelvey led Canada with two goals each.

France (1-1) and Hungary (1-1) will have be off on Day 3 of competition on Wednesday. The morning will start with The Netherlands (2-0) taking on Australia (1-0) at 8 a.m. ET, following by Canada (0-1) vs. China (0-2) at 9:35 a.m.

Team USA (1-1) will face Italy (0-1) at 12:30 p.m. ET, and the day will conclude with Spain (2-0) playing Greece (0-1) at 2:05 p.m.
