Below is a schedule of notable events taking place in the 100 days leading up to the Paris Olympic Games. Many of these events will have a direct impact on determining which athletes qualify to compete in Paris.
April 19-20: U.S. OIympic Wrestling Team Trials (State College, PA)
The U.S. already has earned quota spots in 13 weight classes across men’s freestyle (4), women’s freestyle (6) and Greco-Roman (3). The Trials champion will make the Olympic team and compete in Paris. In any non-qualified weight class, the Trials champion will go to May's World Qualification Tournament and attempt to secure a quota spot for themselves.
May 9-12: Wrestling World Qualification Tournament (Istanbul, Turkey)
This international tournament serves as wrestling’s last-chance qualifier for the Paris Olympics. The U.S. still has five weight classes (three in Greco-Roman, two in men’s freestyle) left to qualify. The U.S. Olympic Trials winners in those five divisions will be competing here and need to finish top two to earn a quota spot.
May 17-18: CYCLING - World BMX Racing Championships (Rock Hill, SC)
The highest-ranked athlete in each gender will earn one quota spot for their National Olympic Committee if they have not yet qualified any quota places at the time of the event.
May 17-18: GYMNASTICS - Core Hydration Classic (Hartford, CT)
The 2024 Core Hydration Classic will be the final opportunity for women to qualify for 2024 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Historically a women’s event, a men’s field was added in and 2022 and 2023, however, the U.S. men’s program will not participate in the 2024 Core Hydration Classic to optimize their preparations for the Olympic Trials and Paris Games. The event could also see two-time Olympian Gabby Douglas’ return.
May 20-June 9: TENNIS - French Open (Paris)
The famous clay-court Grand Slam tournament will be the final qualifying event for men’s and women’s tennis. Afterward, the ranking list will determine which athletes qualify for Paris. Up to four men and four women from the U.S. can qualify for the singles tournament in Paris, while two more selections per gender will be available for doubles-only spots.
May 30-June 2: Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships (Fort Worth, TX)
The top two all-around athletes from the U.S. Championships will automatically advance to the Trials. Also, 10 additional athletes will be selected by the Athlete Selection Committee to qualify for Olympic Trials later in June.
June 15-23: U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials (Indianapolis, IN)
The top-two finishers in each individual event will make the Olympic team, as will some extra swimmers for relays. After winning five medals at the 2023 World Championships, Jack Alexy is attempting to make his first Olympic team.
June 16-23: U.S. Olympic Diving Trials (Knoxville, TN)
Results from Olympic Trials will determine who makes the diving team for Paris.
June 21-30: U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials (Eugene, OR)
For most individual events, the top-three finishers will make the Olympic team. Sha’Carri Richardson is attempting to make her first Olympic team and will enter Trials as the favorite to win the 100m. Three years ago, she dominated at the Trials in the 100m but was retroactively disqualified from the Trials after testing positive for THC, a banned chemical found in marijuana.
June 27-30: U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials (Minneapolis)
The U.S. men’s and women’s gymnastics teams for Paris will be named at the conclusion of Olympic Trials. The U.S. can take up to five gymnasts per gender. The top all-around gymnast at Trials will automatically earn a spot. Four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles is the headliner for Trials.
May 8: Torch Relay arrives in France
The French leg of the Olympic torch relay will begin in Marseille, and travel through 65 French territories. The torch relay will end in Paris on July 26, the day of the Opening Ceremony.
July 24: First day of Olympic competition
The first events of the Olympics take place two days before the Opening Ceremony with preliminary rounds of men's soccer and men's rugby.
July 26: Opening Ceremony for the Paris Olympics
The Games of the XXXIII Olympiad officially begin with the Opening Ceremony, and from there it’s 16 straight days of medal events from July 26 through August 11.
