Road race
Both the men and women's road races will begin from Musashinonomori Park in Tokyo's northwestern suburbs.
For the first 40 kilometers, both races will ride through the mostly flat outskirts of Tokyo’s metropolitan area until reaching Doushi Road, which marks the start of a more than 1,000-meter elevation gain. The section features windy roads along picturesque streams, passing through several small villages and dense forests.
After passing Lake Yamanaka and crossing the Kagosaka Pass, a fast descent of about 15 kilometers will ensue.
The men's and women's courses then diverge.
Men
The men’s race will enter the city of Gotemba before venturing out toward a loop near Mount Fuji. After cresting the Fuji Sanroku climb (14.3 kilometers of about 6% gradient) and returning to Gotemba, the course will make its way toward Fuji International Speedway.
Upon reaching point No. 7 on the circuits map, the riders will make their way through the Fuji Speedway section.
At point No. 8, the race will continue for another full lap of the Fuji Speedway circuit – crossing its finish line a second time – before exiting the speedway and starting the ascent of Mount Mikuni and the Mikuni Pass loop (6.5-kilometer climb of about 10.6% gradient with 20% sections), a climb of about 35 kilometers to the finish.
The course will then re-visit Lake Yamanaka, crossing the Kagosaka Pass once more, before descending back down toward Fuji Speedway and the finish. The Mikuni and Kagosaka climbs come at 30 and 18 kilometers from the finish, respectively. This section through these climbs will likely see intense racing as chasing groups aim to close the gap on breakaway leaders.
Women
The women’s race will arrive at Fuji International Speedway’s wider finish circuit, where riders will complete one and a half laps.
By the time they come off the descent and arrive into the speedway itself, a group of riders will most likely have already cleared the field, with another select group trying to re-join them in time for the finale, perhaps having lost touch on the Doushi Road climb.
When riders cross the finish line for the penultimate time and hear the bell, there will be 17 kilometers to go.
Organizers say everything points to a "very tight finish and memorable finale that will produce very worthy Olympic medalists."
Time trial
Starts at an elevation of 1,934 feet (591 meters) with a descent for 3.04 miles (4.9 kilometers), exiting Fuji International Speedway's track after 1.67 miles (2.7 kilometers) until the lowest point of 1,493 feet (455 meters) is reached.
Next comes a 3.36-mile (5.4-kilometer) climb to the highest point of 2,218 feet (676 meters), followed by a 3.23-mile (5.2-kilometer) descent back to the speedway's track entrance at the 9.63-mile (15.5-kilometer) mark.
Finishing out, a 1.24-mile (2-kilometer) climb to pit lane for an elevation of 1,936 feet (590m), a slight 1.55-mile (2.5-kilometer) descent, then a 1.3-mile (2.1-kilometer) climb to the finish, returning to the 1,934-foot (591-meter) elevation start.
