What to know about the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials
A loaded crop of U.S. track and field stars will compete in Eugene. Six-time world champion Noah Lyles, who is still riding high off a 2023 World Championship performance that saw him become the first athlete since Usain Bolt to win gold in the men’s 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay events, headlines the men's field. Joining Lyles on the track will be Christian Coleman, Grant Holloway, Fred Kerley, Erriyon Knighton, Kenny Bednarek, Rai Benjamin and more top stars vying for Paris. On the field, Ryan Crouser is looking to formally clinch his spot in Paris, where he will aim to become the first field athlete to win three consecutive shot put gold medals.
On the women's side, the headliners on the track include reigning Olympic 400m hurdles champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, women’s 100m world champion Sha’Carri Richardson, and two-time Olympic gold medalist Athing Mu, Nia Ali, Gabby Thomas and many more. On the field, reigning Olympic champions Valarie Allman and Katie Moon join first-time Olympic hopefuls like Laulauga Tausaga-Collins, the 2023 world discus champion.
How do Olympic Track and Field Trials work?
The U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials make the team among the most difficult in the world to earn a spot on.
Unlike other countries whose selection processes feature a selection committee, selection to the U.S. team relies exclusively on results at Trials, a true "do-or-die" format.
“All you get is a bib and a lane,” says Ato Boldon, NBC Olympics broadcast analyst and four-time Olympic medalist. “It doesn't matter who you are. You’re guaranteed drama. It's the toughest team in the world to make. And it’s unlike any other Olympic team on Earth.”
Just to reach the Trials, athletes must meet automatic qualifying standards set by Team USA. And even if an athlete finishes outside of the top three and misses out on an Olympic spot, they're guaranteed prize money if they finish in the top eight. At the 2020 Trials, a total purse of $1.4 million was doled out to top finishers.
How many athletes qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics in track and field?
Up to three athletes can qualify in each of the 21 men's and 21 women's events, which means a total of 126 spots will be earned in Eugene. Three men's and three women's marathon spots were already clinched at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando, Florida: Conner Mantz, Clayton Young and Leonard Korir on the men's side, and Fiona O’Keeffe, Emily Sisson and Dakotah Lindwurm in the women's race. That means a total of 131 spots for now, although the exact number is subject to change due to repetition (ex: Lyles is likely to compete in both the men's 100m and 200m).
Who are the commentators for the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials?
Olympians Ato Boldon, Sanya Richards-Ross, Kara Goucher and Trey Hardee will serve as analysts for NBC Sports’ coverage of the 2024 Trials. They will be joined by play-by-play voices Leigh Diffey and Paul Swangard, plus reporter Lewis Johnson.
Former sprinters Boldon and Richards-Ross combined to earn nine medals on the Olympic stage. Boldon began calling track & field for NBC Sports in 2007 while Richards-Ross joined in 2016.
Goucher, an Olympic distance runner, won the silver medal in the 10,000m at the 2007 World Championships. Olympic decathlete Hardee earned silver in the decathlon at the 2012 London Olympics. Goucher made her NBC Sports debut for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while Hardee made his during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Diffey and Swangard will handle play-by-play duties. Johnson, who joined NBC Sports in 1999 and has worked on 12 Olympic Games, will serve as reporter.
