How do the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials work?
The United States successfully qualified for at least one spot in seven of the eight Olympic diving events, missing out only on the men's synchronized platform competition. Therefore, the remaining seven events will all take place at Trials with Olympic spots on the line.
The week kicks off with the synchronized events. Unlike at the Olympics where each synchronized event takes place over just a single round, at Trials the synchronized events consist of a prelim and a final. Only the top team at the end of the final round will earn a trip to Paris.
The individual events, meanwhile, take place in a similar three-round format as seen at the Olympics. The preliminary round will trim the field to 18, while the semifinal round further narrows the field to 12. In both the men's and women's individual springboard events, the top two finishers will represent Team USA in Paris. However, in the men's and women's platform event, the U.S. can only send one diver to the Games.
Athletes to watch at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials
The United States sent a relatively young contingent of divers to the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and several of those athletes are on the hunt for a return to the Olympic stage.
The duo of Jessica Parratto and Delaney Schnell, who took silver in the women's synchronized platform competition in Tokyo, followed up that performance with bronze-medal finishes at the last two world championships. They are obvious favorites in the synchro competition, but only one can win the lone individual women's platform spot in Paris.
Another Tokyo silver medalist, Andrew Capobianco, will look to cement his status as Team USA's best hope for a men's diving medal in Paris, both as an individual and as one half of the U.S. men's synchro springboard team. Capobianco finished one spot off the podium in the individual springboard competition at the 2023 World Diving Championships.
The most fascinating events to keep an eye on, though, might be the women's springboard events. That's where the U.S. field of divers is deepest, and multiple deserving names will inevitably miss out on a trip to the Games. The women's synchro springboard is likely to come down to a can't miss duel between the team of Tokyo Olympians Krysta Palmer and Alison Gibson against the duo of two-time world medalist Sarah Bacon and 2016 Olympian Kassidy Cook. In the individual competition, Hailey Hernandez surprised everyone at Trials last time around when, as an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, she beat out more experienced divers to capture an Olympic spot. She'll be one of the favorites this time around in a crowded field.
