At the end of six games on Monday, the men's water polo field will be cut from 12 to eight teams as the top four teams in each group move on to the tournament quarterfinals. Here's a look at all six games and where teams sit in the standings.
Game 1: Hungary 17, Serbia 13
Hungary clinched the No. 3 spot in the Group B standings with a victory over the two-time defending Olympic gold medalists.
The Hungarians put up seven goals in the second quarter and six more in the third to take a big 15-9 lead into the final frame. Hungary was 6-for-7 on extra player shots, while Serbia was 5-for-10.
Gergo Zalanki and Gergo Fekete both had four goals for Hungary. The two missed just three shots between them. Serbia's Dusan Mandic led all scorers with five goals, and Cuk Milos added three.
With the win, Hungary finishes pool play 3-2. Serbia falls to 2-3, but remains ahead of France and in fourth place in Group B with the top four teams moving on to the quarterfinals.
Game 2: Japan 14, Australia 13
A game-winning goal by Seiya Adachi with 11 seconds remaining gave Japan its first win of the Paris Olympics.
Australia jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the first quarter of what looked like would be a runaway win. Japan had other plans. The Japanese team outscored Australia 5-2 in each of the second and third quarters to go into the final frame up, 10-9. The two teams tied twice in the fourth before Adachi's game-winner.
Adachi finished with three goals. His teammate Yusuke Inaba had a game-high six scores. Australia was led by Milos Maksimovic with three goals. Nathan Power, Lachlan Edwards, and Luke Pavillard added two each.
Even with the loss, Australia (3-2) is still guaranteed to finish second in Group B and had already locked up a spot in the semifinals. Japan had already been eliminated from the knockout round prior to Monday's game. It leaves Paris 1-4.
Game 3: Greece 9, Italy 8
Greece clinched the top spot in Group A with a narrow defeat of Italy on Monday.
After getting shutout in the third quarter, the Greeks bounced back with three goals in the third. Ioannis Fountoulis scored the game-winning goal with 2:53 remaining.
Neither team led by more than one in the contest, and both teams tied eight times.
Stylianos Argyropoulos led Greece with four goals. Fountoulis finished with two. Francesco Condemi and Lorenzo Bruni had three goals each to lead Italy.
Both Greece and Italy finish pool play 4-1, and Greece gets the top spot in the standings with the head-to-head win. Italy will be the second seed in Group A.
Game 4: USA 14, Croatia 11
The U.S. leap-frogged over Croatia in the Group A standing with a win over the defending world champions on Monday. Read more about the game here.
Game 5: Spain 10, France 8
Spain finished pool play a perfect 5-0 and eliminated France the process with a win on Monday.
After trailing 5-3 at the half, France answered with four goals in the third to tie the score at 7-7 going into the final frame. Spain pulled ahead for good on an extra player goal by Martin Famera and a penalty shot goal by Felipe Perrone early in the fourth.
Alberto Munarriz and Bernat Sanahuja each had a hat trick for Spain. Ugo Crousillat led France with three goals, the only French player to find the net more than once.
With the loss, France finishes Group B in fifth place with the top four teams moving on the quarterfinals. The French finish their home Olympics 1-4.
Game 6: Montenegro 10, Romania 7
In a matchup of two teams already eliminated from the quarterfinals, Montenegro got the best of Romania to finish 1-4 and in fifth place in the Group B standings.
Marko Mrsic led Montenegro with three goals. Tudor Fulea led Romania with two goals.
Romania was the only team to not win a game in Paris. Montenegro finishes 1-4.
