The United States missed out on two opportunities in 2019 to qualify a team and/or a duet for Tokyo. At the World Aquatics Championships, the U.S. team finished 11th and the duet of Anita Alvarez and Ruby Remati placed 12th. Two weeks later, both units finished third behind Canada and Mexico at the Pan American Games.

Team USA's last chance to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics comes May 1-4 at the FINA Olympic Games Artistic Swimming Qualification Tournament 2021. The top three teams and top seven duets will earn Olympic placement.
